After Covid-19 now monkeypox has started to create panic all over the world. Four patients have been found in India till now. One had gone to Shimla and returned to his home in Delhi and this incident has shaken the health system. Now the discussion about the monkeypox vaccine has started.
Corona could be defeated only because of the vaccine. Due to this, the Indian pharmaceutical industry is looking to develop vaccines and drugs for this viral disease. The Serum Institute of India (SII), Pune, was instrumental in producing the Covishield vaccine in India. Although the vaccine was developed by a British company, most of its trials were conducted with SII. After which the developed vaccine was provided to Indians and supplied all over the world.
Adar Poonawalla, Chief Executive Officer of the Serum Institute of India said that they are considering developing an mRNA vaccine for monkeypox with their global partner Novavax. Along with this, the idea of importing a smallpox vaccine manufactured by Denmark’s company Bavarian Nordic is also underway.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), smallpox vaccines can be effective against monkeypox. The WHO has also said that this vaccine should be given only to people who have been in direct contact with a monkeypox patient. However, WHO does not recommend mass vaccination.
